St. Raphael School was originally built in the early 1950's. It
started out as a French school called Ecole St. Raphael. It had
only one area which we now call "The Junior Wing". In
the late 1960's, "The Senior Wing" was added on. St. Raphael
was the first senior elementary school in New Sudbury.
The school was on an eight day cycle which meant if the cycle started
on Monday the next cycle would start on the Thursday of the next
week. The classes were dismissed at 2:05 p.m. We also had electives.
The teachers would each offer something like chess, crafts, home
economics, or industrial arts. During the last period of each Friday
the students would go to their designated area to do the activity
they signed up for. Students were allowed to change activities every
three months.
The current French Room was used as a lunchroom and a "sports
room" at other times. There were so many people there had to
be two periods for lunch. The home economics and industrial arts
programs were discontinued because of government cut-backs. The
home economics room is now the senior computer lab where students
have access to the Internet. The equipment in the industrial arts
room was given to Marymount College for its shop classes.
This school is very proud of it's high level of academics, athletic
achievements, community involvement, parish activities, and advances
in science and technology. Students who attend St. Raphael's consistently
have fun and win awards in intramural sports, science and technology,
mathematics and many other academic categories, and continue these
accomplishments in their higher education.
